Juneteenth is the oldest-known commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, 2 years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation became official on January 1, 1863, Major-General Gordon Granger led his Union soldiers into Galveston, Texas with the news that the Civil War had ended and that the enslaved were now free.
We are a group of community members committed to building connections through advocacy, and celebration of black community in southern Oregon. It’s our goal to promote a visible sense of community and connection. We offer the opportunity to get plugged in to the black community whether you are a person of color, an ally, family member or friend.
